However, Dent did not legally transfer ownership of the slaves to Julia or her sisters, and their ownership status has been unclear. They were a presence in and about White Haven, and in her memoir, Julia tells a few anecdotes about her life surrounded by slaves. Julia and her sisters recalled that their father had given each of them three or four slaves when they were little, to be childhood playmates and then to serve them in adulthood.
